My new girlfriend recently opened up to me about a miscarriage she suffered a few months ago. Her ex didn't offer her any support and now I feel its up to me to help her through this. She is emotionally a very open person and we tell each other how much we mean to each other every day. Much like I TRY to do with my husband, only there's no romantic feelings behind the love with her, just incredibly awesome friendship. He seems VERY threatened about this...its true that romantic intimacy isn't a comfortable thing for me, but in friendships or relatioships of any kind, it kinda depends on the other person as far as how open I am with my feelings.

Another friend I've been close to for 6 years and I think she's a great person, but I don't have a lot in common with her anymore. I love these two girls a lot though, I have a lot of respect for them, we express our love for each other in hard times but otherwise, we're just not very emotionally open with each other about our feelings. My best of the besties I've only known for about 2 years, but she and I have an incredibly close bond. We've been through alot individually the last several years and we have a lot of empathy and compassion for each other.

To elaborate more specifically, I have three very close friends that I talk to regularly, see every month or so. I do go to them to get advice and fresh perspective on my relatioship issues because I trust them, they are good people and I know they would never judge me OR my husband. Each friendships dynamics are different; one I talk to more via email and text messages, but she's got a very outgoing, strong, brutally honest personality that is hard (overwhelming) for me to be around in person sometimes.

A good start are the SCIM booklets. There is one called "Caring for those who have miscarried".

It is important not to try and take control. I know this is hard because you want to help and to feel useful but it is important that your girlfriend gets the chance to develop her own feelings towards her miscarrage and does not try to get better too fast just so that you can feel that you have helped. The most important thing is to be available to listen and not to find the quick and easy fix.
